Overview

Purified human pancreatic islets (PHPI) are a cellular therapy consisting of insulin-producing beta cells, along with alpha and delta cells, harvested from deceased donor pancreata. In the clinical research program led by Dr. Rodolfo Alejandro at the University of Miami's Diabetes Research Institute, these islets are transplanted into patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, typically via infusion into the portal vein of the liver. The therapy is designed to restore endogenous insulin secretion and physiological glucose regulation, aiming to achieve insulin independence and prevent severe hypoglycemic episodes. This specific program often targets patients with type 1 diabetes who have already received a kidney transplant or those with impaired awareness of hypoglycemia and brittle diabetes.
