Overview

Puruixiao is a small molecule P2X7 receptor antagonist developed by Shanghai Yaogu Pharmaceutical for the treatment of chronic non-bacterial prostatitis (CNP), also known as chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS). The P2X7 receptor is an ATP-gated ion channel expressed on immune cells, including macrophages and microglia, where its activation triggers the NLRP3 inflammasome assembly and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-1β and IL-18. By selectively antagonizing this receptor, Puruixiao aims to mitigate the inflammatory response and associated neuropathic pain in the prostate and pelvic region. The drug is currently being evaluated in Phase III clinical trials in China as an oral capsule formulation.
