Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PUVA-inactivated Neisseria gonorrhoeae whole-cell vaccine is an experimental vaccine candidate designed to prevent gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium *Neisseria gonorrhoeae*. The vaccine is produced by inactivating *Neisseria gonorrhoeae* using 4-aminomethyl-4,5',8-trimethylpsoralen (AMT), a psoralen derivative, and ultraviolet A (UVA) light (PUVA). This inactivation method introduces DNA crosslinks that disable bacterial replication while preserving native cell-surface protein epitopes, resulting in 'killed but metabolically active' (KBMA) bacteria. Preclinical studies in mice have demonstrated that the vaccine induces a robust humoral immune response and mucosal changes, particularly when compared to traditional formalin-inactivated vaccines.
