Overview

pVAX plasmid DNA (specifically the pVAX1 plasmid vector) is an empty, non-antigen-encoding bacterial plasmid DNA construct used as a control or placebo comparator in clinical and veterinary trials. Developed under the auspices of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) and collaborating institutions, it has been evaluated in a Phase 3 trial in China as a control vaccine within an integrated schistosomiasis control program targeting *Schistosoma japonicum* transmission in bovines (water buffalo and cattle). The plasmid serves as the backbone vector for active DNA vaccines (such as SjCTPI-Hsp70 and SjC23-Hsp70) but is administered in its empty form to establish baseline immune responses and evaluate vaccine efficacy. It is typically manufactured to GLP standards by contract manufacturers like Aldevron.
