Overview

pVAXrcPSAv53I (also known as pVAXrcPSAv53l) is an investigational DNA vaccine developed for the treatment of relapsed prostate cancer. It was created through a collaboration between the Karolinska Institute and Cyto Pulse Sciences, with clinical sponsorship from Uppsala University Hospital. The vaccine utilizes a plasmid DNA construct that encodes a xenogeneic (rhesus) version of the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA). The use of a non-human PSA sequence is intended to enhance the immune system's ability to recognize and attack PSA-expressing cancer cells, effectively breaking the body's natural immune tolerance to the human self-antigen. In clinical trials, the vaccine is administered intradermally using the DERMA VAX™ in vivo electroporation system, which facilitates the entry of the DNA into cells to ensure robust expression of the rhPSA protein and subsequent immune activation.
