Overview

pVGI.1 is a recombinant plasmid DNA gene therapy designed to encode the human Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor C (VEGF-C), also referred to as VEGF-2. Developed primarily for the treatment of severe angina pectoris and myocardial ischemia, the drug is intended to stimulate therapeutic angiogenesis—the growth of new blood vessels—to improve blood flow to ischemic heart tissue. The plasmid is typically delivered via direct intramyocardial injection using specialized catheter systems like the Stiletto™ catheter. While VEGF-C is best known for its role in lymphangiogenesis via the VEGFR-3 receptor, it also possesses angiogenic activity through its interaction with VEGFR-2, making it a candidate for treating coronary artery disease.
