Overview

PvP001 (TAK-062) is a recombinant, computationally engineered protease developed for the treatment of celiac disease. Originally developed by PvP Bio and later acquired by Takeda, the enzyme (known as KumaMax) is a modified version of kumamolisin-As. It is designed to remain highly active in the acidic environment of the stomach and specifically target and degrade the immunogenic proline- and glutamine-rich peptides of gluten before they reach the small intestine. By breaking down these peptides, PvP001 aims to prevent the inflammatory and autoimmune response triggered by accidental gluten ingestion in patients following a gluten-free diet. PvP001 refers specifically to the liquid formulation used in early clinical trials, while PVP002 and PVP003 represent capsule and tablet formulations, respectively.
