PX protease

PX protease is a recombinant protease being developed by the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences for the treatment of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). PMP is a rare malignancy characterized by the accumulation of voluminous mucinous ascites within the peritoneal cavity, typically originating from appendiceal mucinous neoplasms. The therapeutic approach involves the intratumoral or intraperitoneal administration of PX protease to enzymatically degrade the dense mucin matrix, which is primarily composed of MUC2 and MUC5AC proteins. By breaking down this "jelly-like" substance, the drug aims to achieve mucin debulking, thereby reducing tumor burden and potentially improving the outcomes for patients who are ineligible for or have recurred after standard cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).
