Overview

Pygeum africanum extract is a phytotherapeutic (botanical) drug derived from the bark of the African prune tree (*Prunus africana*, formerly *Pygeum africanum*). It has been used since 1969, primarily in Europe, for the treatment of mild to moderate symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and associated lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The drug is a standardized lipophilic extract containing active components such as phytosterols (notably beta-sitosterol), pentacyclic triterpenes (ursolic and oleanolic acids), and ferulic acid esters. Its pharmacological profile is multi-factorial, involving anti-inflammatory activity through the inhibition of leukotriene-mediated chemotaxis, anti-proliferative effects on prostatic fibroblasts and myofibroblasts, and modulation of bladder detrusor muscle hypercontractility. Unlike synthetic drugs that target a single protein, its therapeutic benefits are attributed to a combination of anti-androgenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative mechanisms within the prostatic tissue. It is marketed by Pierre Fabre and has been the subject of Phase IV observational studies evaluating quality of life in patients with LUTS/BPH.
