Overview

PYO Phage (also known as Pyo-bacteriophage) is a therapeutic cocktail of bacteriophages designed to treat purulent (pyogenic) bacterial infections. Originally developed by the Eliava Institute of Bacteriophages, Microbiology and Virology in Georgia, the cocktail typically contains lytic phages targeting five major groups of bacterial pathogens: Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus spp. The mechanism of action involves the specific attachment of phages to bacterial cell walls, injection of viral DNA, intracellular replication, and subsequent lysis of the host bacteria, releasing new progeny phages to continue the cycle. In clinical research, notably a trial led by Balgrist University Hospital (NCT02139475), PYO Phage was evaluated via intravesical administration for the treatment of urinary tract infections in patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).
