*Pyrenacantha staudtii* extract is a botanical drug candidate derived from the ethanol extraction of the African medicinal plant *Pyrenacantha staudtii*. Traditionally used in African folklore for the treatment of various cancers, the extract has demonstrated significant in vitro anticancer activity against human epithelial MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Its primary mechanism of action involves the induction of anoikis, a form of apoptosis triggered by the loss of cell-matrix interactions. This is achieved through the downregulation of β1-integrin expression and the inhibition of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) phosphorylation at the Tyr397 site. The extract shows particular potential for the treatment of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, with IC50 values reported in the range of 23-38 μg/ml.
