Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pyrethrum extract is a natural insecticide derived from the flowers of *Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium*. It contains a mixture of six active compounds known as pyrethrins (Pyrethrin I and II, Cinerin I and II, and Jasmolin I and II). These compounds act as neurotoxins by targeting the nervous systems of insects and parasites. Specifically, they delay the closure of voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells, leading to repetitive nerve discharges, paralysis, and death of the parasite. In pharmaceutical applications, pyrethrum extract is primarily used as a topical treatment for infestations of head lice (*Pediculus humanus capitis*), pubic lice (*Pthirus pubis*), and body lice. It is frequently formulated with piperonyl butoxide, a synergist that inhibits the insect's metabolic enzymes (cytochrome P450), thereby enhancing the efficacy of the pyrethrins. It is available over-the-counter in various formulations such as shampoos, gels, and solutions.
