Pyridostigmine bromide extended-release is a reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor developed by Amneal Pharmaceuticals for the pretreatment of soman nerve agent poisoning. Approved by the FDA in October 2024, this 105 mg oral tablet is specifically designed for the U.S. Armed Services and allies to provide protection against the lethal effects of soman. The formulation utilizes Amneal's proprietary GRANDE drug delivery technology to enable once-daily dosing. By carbamylating acetylcholinesterase, the drug prevents the irreversible inhibition and subsequent 'aging' of the enzyme by organophosphate nerve agents. It is intended for use in conjunction with post-exposure treatments, including atropine and pralidoxime.
