Pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) is the metabolically active form of vitamin B6, serving as an essential coenzyme for over 140 biochemical reactions, including amino acid metabolism and the biosynthesis of neurotransmitters such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), dopamine, and serotonin. In clinical practice, PLP is administered to treat rare genetic disorders like pyridoxal 5′-phosphate-binding protein (PLPBP) deficiency and pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy, where patients cannot effectively utilize or maintain levels of the active cofactor.
