Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pyrimethamine + sulfadiazine is a combination antimicrobial therapy that works synergistically to treat parasitic infections, particularly toxoplasmosis. Pyrimethamine inhibits dihydrofolate reductase while sulfadiazine competes with p-aminobenzoic acid, both disrupting folate metabolism in parasites and preventing their DNA synthesis and reproduction. This combination is particularly effective against Toxoplasma gondii infections and is typically administered with folinic acid to reduce side effects.
