Overview

**Pyrinuron** is a synthetic organic compound, formerly used as a rodenticide under the trade names Vacor and Pyriminil. It acts primarily as a vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) antagonist, disrupting the utilization of vitamin B6 and leading to deficiency[10][12]. It selectively destroys insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells, often causing type 1 diabetes in humans and animals through a mechanism involving the formation of Vacor-mononucleotide (VMN) and subsequent activation of SARM1, leading to NAD+ depletion and cell death[10][12]. Pyrinuron is also an inhibitor of the enzymes nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) and NMN adenylyltransferase 2 (NMNAT2)[4][12]. Due to high toxicity, risks of secondary poisoning, and the induction of diabetes, its commercial use as a pesticide has been discontinued since 1979, and it is not registered or approved by regulatory agencies for any therapeutic or agricultural use[1][13]. Pyrinuron remains a subject of research, particularly for experimental induction of diabetes and vitamin B6 deficiency in laboratory settings[10][12].
