Pyriproxyfen is a small molecule insect growth regulator (IGR) that acts as a juvenile hormone analogue (JHA). It mimics the natural juvenile hormone in insects, which is essential for regulating development and reproduction. By binding to the juvenile hormone receptor (specifically the Methoprene-tolerant protein), pyriproxyfen disrupts the transition between life stages, preventing larvae from maturing into adults and inhibiting egg hatching. It is characterized by high photostability and low mammalian toxicity. While primarily used in agriculture and veterinary medicine for flea and pest control, it is being investigated by the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) for the control of tungiasis (sand flea infestation) through environmental application in endemic regions.
