Pyritinol is a semi-synthetic, water-soluble analog of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), created by linking two vitamin B6 molecules with a disulfide bridge. Developed in the early 1960s by Merck Laboratories, it has been used since the 1970s as both a prescription and over-the-counter drug for cognitive disorders and other neurological conditions. Pyritinol acts primarily as a nootropic agent, improving cerebral function in patients with cerebral dysfunction by promoting glucose reuptake in the brain and modulating neurotransmitter pathways including acetylcholine, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), and gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). It also exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, lowers plasma viscosity, and may increase choline uptake into neurons to boost acetylcholine levels. Pyritinol has been indicated for use in cerebrovascular disorders, mental function disorders such as dementia (including Alzheimer's disease), stroke recovery, age-related memory loss, head injury rehabilitation, vegetative dysfunction in children/adolescents, and rheumatoid arthritis[1][2][3][4][5][7][8].
