Pyrogallol-o-sulfate is a small molecule metabolite derived from the consumption of (poly)phenol-rich foods, such as fruits, legumes, nuts, coffee, and red wine. It belongs to the class of phenylsulfates and is found circulating in human plasma. This compound is being investigated for its potential therapeutic benefits, particularly its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic properties. Studies indicate its ability to reduce oxidative stress, decrease neuroinflammation, and attenuate cell death mechanisms relevant to neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's disease. Additionally, it has shown promise in diabetic retinopathy by decreasing microglial activation and inhibiting the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Pyrogallol-o-sulfate is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, further supporting its potential in neurological applications.
