Pyropheophorbide phosphatidic acid (Pyro PA) is a lipid-modified photosensitizer derived from pyropheophorbide-a, a chlorophyll-based molecule. It is designed for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT), where it is typically encapsulated in nanocarriers such as lipid-calcium phosphate (LCP) nanoparticles. Upon activation by specific wavelengths of light, Pyro PA generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that induce localized cytotoxicity in tumor cells. In research settings, it has been targeted to sigma receptors using ligands like aminoethylanisamide (AEAA) and combined with gene therapies, such as EGFR siRNA, to enhance therapeutic efficacy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
