Overview

Pyrrobutamine is a first-generation H1-antihistamine and anticholinergic agent belonging to the stilbene class of organic compounds[1][4][7]. It acts primarily by blocking histamine H1 receptors, thereby preventing histamine from binding and reducing symptoms associated with allergic reactions such as itching, swelling, redness, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and urticaria[1][6][8]. Pyrrobutamine also exhibits anticholinergic effects by antagonizing muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, which may help alleviate symptoms related to excessive cholinergic activity (e.g., bronchoconstriction)[7]. Its dual action on both histaminic and cholinergic pathways provides therapeutic benefits in conditions like allergic rhinitis and potentially asthma[7]. As a first-generation antihistamine, it can cross the blood-brain barrier and may cause central nervous system side effects such as sedation[8].
