Pyrrolnitrin is a naturally occurring phenylpyrrole antifungal agent produced by certain Pseudomonas and Burkholderia species as a secondary metabolite from tryptophan[5][7]. It exhibits broad-spectrum antibiotic activity, particularly against dermatophytic fungi such as Trichophyton species, as well as other fungi, yeasts, and some gram-positive bacteria[1][3][4][8]. Pyrrolnitrin acts primarily by inhibiting the terminal electron transport system in fungal cells, thereby disrupting cellular respiration and energy production[1][5][8]. Its mechanism involves inhibition of the respiratory electron transport chain between succinate or NADH and coenzyme Q. This leads to immediate inhibition of both endogenous and exogenous respiration in susceptible organisms[8]. Pyrrolnitrin has served as a lead structure for synthetic fungicides like fenpiclonil and fludioxonil[5].
