Overview
Pyruvic acid is a naturally occurring alpha-keto acid and a key intermediate in cellular metabolism, particularly glycolysis and the citric acid (Krebs) cycle. It is used as an ingredient in blood cell processing solutions to rejuvenate red blood cells prior to transfusion[1]. Pyruvic acid can be synthesized by the body and is also found in various foods. As a supplement or topical agent, it has been investigated for potential benefits in weight loss, skin conditions (such as acne), cardiovascular therapy (as an inotropic agent), and antioxidant effects[1][3][4][6]. Its mechanism of action includes serving as a metabolic substrate for energy production and acting as an antioxidant by scavenging free radicals[6]. Pyruvic acid may also promote exfoliation when applied topically.
