Overview
Q-VAX is a whole-cell, formalin-inactivated biological vaccine derived from the Phase I Henzerling strain of *Coxiella burnetii*, the gram-negative intracellular bacterium responsible for Q fever. It is currently the only licensed human vaccine against Q fever and has been used in Australia since 1989, primarily for high-risk occupational groups such as farmers, abattoir workers, and laboratory personnel. The vaccine stimulates both humoral and cellular immunity to prevent infection. Due to the risk of severe local and systemic hypersensitivity reactions in individuals with prior exposure to *C. burnetii*, mandatory pre-vaccination screening involving both a skin test and serology is required to rule out existing immunity.
