Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Q-VAX is a whole-cell, inactivated bacterial vaccine developed to prevent Q fever, a highly infectious zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium *Coxiella burnetii*. It is the only licensed Q fever vaccine in the world and is manufactured and available in Australia. The vaccine is prepared from the Phase I Henzerling strain of *C. burnetii* grown in embryonated chicken eggs and inactivated with formalin. Prior to vaccination, individuals must undergo pre-vaccination screening, including serology and a skin test (using the Q-VAX Skin Test), to exclude those with prior exposure or sensitization, as they are at risk of severe hypersensitivity reactions. Q-VAX is administered as a single subcutaneous or intramuscular injection and is recommended for at-risk adult populations, such as abattoir workers, veterinarians, and farmers.
