Q11 is a synthetic, 11-amino acid self-assembling peptide with the sequence Ac-QQKFQFQFEQQ-NH2. It is a prominent biomaterial platform used in the development of subunit vaccines and injectable scaffolds for tissue engineering. Under physiological conditions, Q11 monomers spontaneously organize into stable, non-cytotoxic nanofibers with a beta-sheet architecture. In vaccine applications, antigenic epitopes are typically synthesized as a continuous sequence with the Q11 peptide, allowing for the multivalent display of antigens on the nanofiber surface. This high-density presentation, coupled with Q11's intrinsic ability to act as a self-adjuvant by activating the innate immune system (specifically the NLRP3 inflammasome), significantly enhances the immunogenicity of attached antigens, eliciting robust humoral and cellular immune responses without the need for supplemental inflammatory adjuvants.
