Overview

QAX567 is an investigational human monoclonal antibody developed by Novartis that targets and neutralizes interleukin-13 (IL-13). IL-13 is a key Th2 cytokine that plays a significant role in chronic inflammation and tissue fibrosis. The drug is primarily being evaluated for the treatment of perianal fistulas in patients with Crohn's disease. The therapeutic rationale is based on the observation that IL-13 promotes the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process that contributes to the formation and persistence of fistulous tracts. By inhibiting IL-13 signaling, QAX567 aims to reduce local inflammation and promote the healing of these complex tracts. In clinical trials, it has been administered via local intrafistular injection to maximize drug concentration at the site of the lesion.
