QAX935 (also known as IMO-2134) is an investigational synthetic oligonucleotide that acts as a selective agonist of Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9). It was developed by Novartis through a strategic collaboration with Idera Pharmaceuticals, utilizing Idera's proprietary Immune Modulatory Oligonucleotide (IMO) platform. The compound was primarily investigated for the treatment of respiratory and allergic conditions, including asthma and allergic rhinitis. The mechanism of action involves the activation of TLR9 in immune cells, such as plasmacytoid dendritic cells, to induce a Th1-biased immune response. This shift is intended to suppress the Th2-driven allergic inflammation characteristic of asthma and other allergic diseases. Clinical development reached Phase 1 trials, where it was evaluated for safety, tolerability, and its ability to reduce airway hyperresponsiveness. However, Novartis subsequently discontinued the development of QAX935, and it is no longer present in active clinical pipelines.
