Overview

QEL-005 is an investigational cell therapy consisting of autologous regulatory T cells (Tregs) engineered to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) that targets CD19, commonly found on B cells[1][3]. Unlike standard cytotoxic CAR therapies, QEL-005 uses CD19 CAR-Tregs to modulate immune responses and suppress inflammation in complex autoimmune diseases. The therapy is designed to maintain a regulatory T cell phenotype while providing antigen-specific suppression of B cell function and broader anti-inflammatory activity, including modulation of T cell and monocyte/macrophage populations. Mechanistic features include reduced B cell antigen presentation, lowered antibody production, decreased cytokine release from B cells, and bystander suppression of other immune cell subsets. Developed for rheumatologic autoimmune diseases with initial trial indications in systemic sclerosis and difficult-to-treat persistent inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis, QEL-005 aims to restore immune tolerance with limited risk of drug-related toxicity[1][3][11].
