Overview
Qi Zhu Fang (QZF) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed by the Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, affiliated with the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Primarily indicated for the treatment of breast cancer, particularly as an adjuvant therapy to prevent metastasis and recurrence, the formula is designed to invigorate Qi and strengthen the Spleen according to TCM principles. Mechanistically, Qi Zhu Fang has been shown to inhibit the growth and metastasis of breast cancer cells by modulating the tumor microenvironment. It suppresses the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and inhibits key signaling pathways, including the TGF-β1/Smad and PI3K/Akt pathways. Furthermore, research indicates that the formula can reduce the recruitment of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and shift macrophage polarization from the pro-tumor M2 phenotype toward the anti-tumor M1 phenotype, thereby enhancing the host's anti-tumor immune response.
