Qiangzhu Qinggan (QZQG) formula is an investigational traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed as an adjunctive therapy for the treatment of severe influenza in adults. It is a combination and innovation of two ancient TCM formulas: Jiuweiqianghuo Decoction and Zhuyeshigao Decoction, which have been used for centuries to treat exogenous febrile diseases. The formula consists of 18 herbal ingredients, including Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii (Qiang Huo), Gypsum Fibrosum (Sheng Shi Gao), Codonopsis Radix (Dang Shen), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), Saposhnikovia Divaricata (Fang Feng), Rhizoma Atractylodis (Fu Chao Cang Zhu), Pinellia Ternata (Ban Xia), Taraxacum (Pu Gong Ying), Astragalus Membranaceus (Huang Qi), Lophatherum Gracile (Dan Zhu Ye), Radix Ophiopogonis (Mai Dong), Rehmannia Glutinosa (Sheng Di Huang), Scutellaria baicalensis (Huang Qin), Asari Radix Rhizoma (Xi Xin), Ligusticum wallichii (Chuan Xiong), Honey-fried Herba Ephedrae (Zhi Ma Huang), Vitex negundo (Huang Jing Zi), and Glycyrrhizae Radix Et Rhizoma (Gan Cao). It is administered as granules and is being evaluated in clinical trials as an adjunctive therapy to standard western antiviral treatment (such as oseltamivir) to improve clinical outcomes, alleviate symptoms, and prevent progression to critical illness in hospitalized patients with severe influenza.
