Overview

Qigui Fuyuan Tang is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal decoction primarily indicated for the treatment of ischemic stroke and its associated neurological deficits, such as hemiplegia and sensory loss. The formula is constructed based on the TCM theory of "tonifying Qi and activating blood" (Yi Qi Huo Xue), typically containing *Astragalus membranaceus* (Huangqi) and *Cinnamomum cassia* (Guizhi) as its principal ingredients. Pharmacological studies indicate that the decoction exerts neuroprotective effects by promoting angiogenesis through the upregulation of VEGF, reducing neuroinflammation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha, and preventing neuronal apoptosis via the modulation of the Bcl-2/Bax ratio and inhibition of Caspase-3. It is frequently evaluated in clinical settings in China for its ability to improve the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores and activities of daily living in post-stroke patients.
