Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Qihuang Zhuyu Formula is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compound prescription developed based on the TCM theory of "qi and blood." It consists of five herbs: Milkvetch Root (Astragali Radix), Manyflower Solomonseal Rhizome (Polygonati Rhizoma), Sappan Wood (Sappan Lignum), Safflower (Carthami Flos), and Leech (Hirudo)[1][10]. This hospital preparation from Jiangsu Province Hospital of Chinese Medicine is primarily used for the treatment of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases, particularly focused on improving blood circulation, regulating qi, and removing stasis[1]. Mechanistically, Qihuang Zhuyu Formula has been shown to attenuate atherosclerosis and coronary artery micro-thrombosis. It regulates cholesterol efflux and endothelial inflammation by targeting the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ)-mediated PPARγ/LXRα/ABCA1-ABCG1 and PPARγ/NF-κB p65 pathways[1][6]. It also inhibits PI3K/Akt/αIIbβ3-mediated platelet activation and downstream inflammatory responses[3]. The formula is composed as a botanical combination (not as a single molecule), based on centuries of TCM practice, but systematically studied in recent preclinical research[1][3][10].
