Overview

Qing-Luo-Yin is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula composed of four main herbs: Sophora flavescens (Kushen), Sinomenium acutum (Qingfengteng), Phellodendron chinense (Huangbai), and Dioscorea collettii var. hypoglauca (Bixie)[2][3]. Originally developed by Jiren Li, a contemporary TCM master, it is used to treat "Hot Syndrome" patterns, most notably rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as well as traditional summer-heat ("shu wen") syndromes such as hyperthermia and heatstroke[1][2][3][7]. The principal mechanism of action appears to be immunomodulation, including inhibition of angiogenesis, inflammation, nucleotide metabolism, and immune functions. Active constituents, such as matrine, berberine, and sinomenine, contribute to anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, and immunosuppressive activities through effects on pathways including purine and pyrimidine metabolism, suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, modulation of monocyte/macrophage polarization, and PPAR-γ activation. The formula has also demonstrated a protective effect against methotrexate-induced hepatic injury in animal models and has historical use in TCM for clearing summer-heat and resolving dampness[1][2][4][7].
