Overview

Qing Shu Yi Qi Tang is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed in 1852. It is composed of multiple herbs including American ginseng (Xi Yang Shen), watermelon (Xi Gua), astragalus root (Huang Qi), ophiopogon root, pueraria root, dong quai root, massa fermenta, alismatis rhizome, white atractylodes rhizome, schisandra fruit, cimicifuga rhizome, phellodendron bark, green citrus peel and Chinese licorice root[1][5][7]. The formula is primarily used to clear summer-heat and augment qi—addressing symptoms such as fever with thirst or dehydration due to loss of fluids from heat exposure. In TCM terms it replenishes qi (vital energy), nourishes yin fluids and clears internal heat[1][2][5]. Western indications associated with its use include hyperthermia/heat stroke recovery or convalescence from acute infectious diseases such as pneumonia[1]. Recent studies have explored its use as a complementary therapy for COVID-19 with Delta variant when combined with standard Western medicine; evidence suggests potential benefits in symptom relief but further research is needed for definitive conclusions[3].
