Qingchang Wenzhong Formula

Qingchang Wenzhong Formula (QCWZD) is a traditional Chinese herbal prescription developed for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and other inflammatory bowel diseases. It is composed of several herbs including Coptis, Cannon ginger, Sophora, Indigo naturalis, Sanguisorba carbonisata (charred Sanguisorba), Aucklandia (Costus root), Pseudo-Ginseng (Panax notoginseng), and Licorice. The major active compounds identified in the formula include berberine hydrochloride, gallic acid, ginsenoside Rg1 and Rb1 (from Panax notoginseng), and liquiritin (from licorice)[4]. QCWZD exerts its effects by modulating gut microbiota composition and promoting beneficial bacterial populations while reducing enteric pathogens[2][4]. Mechanistically, it enhances intestinal barrier function by regulating inflammation—partly through upregulation of NLRP12 expression—and accelerates mucosal repair via activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway[2][3][4]. It also reduces inflammation markers such as HIF-1α in CD4+ T cells[5], improves tryptophan metabolism linked to epithelial regeneration[4], protects against intestinal fibrosis in ulcerative colitis-associated cancer models[3], and has demonstrated efficacy in both animal models and clinical studies for ameliorating symptoms of ulcerative colitis.
