Overview
Qinghuatanshi decoction is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by Shuguang Hospital, affiliated with the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is specifically formulated for the treatment of non-puerperal mastitis (NPM), including plasma cell mastitis (PCM) and granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM). The decoction is designed to address the TCM patterns of heat-toxicity and phlegm-dampness, which are believed to underlie the chronic inflammatory and nodular nature of these conditions. Mechanistically, the formula exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). Clinical studies conducted at Shuguang Hospital suggest that the decoction can effectively reduce breast mass size, alleviate pain, and lower the risk of post-surgical recurrence in patients with chronic mastitis by modulating the local immune environment.
