Overview

**Qingke beta-glucan** is a naturally occurring high-molecular-weight polysaccharide isolated from Qingke (Tibetan hulless barley, Hordeum vulgare L. var. nudum) and characterized by β-(1→4) glucan main chains and β-(1→3) side chains[1][5]. It is primarily investigated as a functional food and nutraceutical ingredient, not a pharmaceutical drug. Mechanistically, Qingke beta-glucan acts by increasing intestinal viscosity, interacting with starch and amylose, and inhibiting digestive enzymes including α-glucosidase and α-amylase[1][5]. This inhibition can slow glucose absorption and lower postprandial glycemic response, supporting its hypoglycemic potential[1][5]. Additionally, Qingke beta-glucan exhibits antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory effects, and may modulate gut microbiota to reduce neuroinflammation and promote cognitive health[2][3][4]. In animal studies, it improves metabolic parameters (cholesterol, glucose, body weight) and ameliorates Alzheimer’s disease-associated cognitive decline[4].
