Qingre Tongluo Decoction is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by the Yunnan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (The First Affiliated Hospital of Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine) for the treatment of refractory rheumatoid arthritis (RRA). The decoction is formulated based on the TCM principle of clearing heat and unblocking the collaterals to address the 'Damp-Heat' and 'Blood Stasis' patterns often observed in chronic joint inflammation. It functions primarily by modulating the immune system and suppressing the inflammatory cascade. Research indicates that the decoction reduces the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6), while also regulating the Th17/Treg cell balance and inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway. It is typically used as an adjunctive therapy for patients who show an inadequate response to standard disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
