Overview
This is a combination therapy consisting of QingreHuoxue decoction (a traditional Chinese medicine herbal formula), hydroxychloroquine, and methotrexate. It has been studied as an integrative approach for the treatment of active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). QingreHuoxue decoction contains multiple herbs such as Salvia miltiorrhiza, Panax ginseng, Coptis chinensis, Pinellia ternata, Paeonia lactiflora, Panax notoginseng, Pueraria lobata, and Cistanche deserticola. The mechanism of action involves modulation of inflammatory and angiogenic pathways by the herbal components; hydroxychloroquine acts as an immunomodulator by interfering with lysosomal activity and antigen presentation; methotrexate is a folic acid antagonist that inhibits dihydrofolate reductase to suppress immune cell proliferation. Clinical studies have shown this combination can reduce disease activity scores in RA patients comparably to conventional synthetic DMARDs alone[1][3].
