Overview
Qizhu Tangshen Granules is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed by the Xiyuan Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences for the treatment of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The preparation is based on the therapeutic principles of tonifying Qi and resolving blood stasis, primarily utilizing extracts from *Astragalus membranaceus* (Huangqi) and *Hirudo* (Shuizhi). Mechanistically, it targets the progression of renal fibrosis by inhibiting the Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) and Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) signaling pathways. Additionally, the inclusion of *Hirudo* provides anticoagulant properties through thrombin inhibition, which helps improve renal microcirculation. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing proteinuria and improving overall renal function in patients with diabetic nephropathy.
