Overview

This quadrivalent recombinant human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is designed to protect against infection by HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18. Developed by the Chengdu Institute of Biological Products (CDIBP), it utilizes the *Hansenula polymorpha* (a methylotrophic yeast) expression system to produce virus-like particles (VLPs) of the L1 capsid protein. This expression system is a key differentiator from other HPV vaccines like Gardasil, which uses *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*. The vaccine targets high-risk HPV types 16 and 18, which are the primary causes of cervical cancer, as well as low-risk types 6 and 11, which cause the majority of genital warts. It has been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials in China (e.g., CTR20171662) to assess its protective efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity in women aged 18 to 45 years.
