The quadrivalent inactivated split virion influenza vaccine is a seasonal vaccine designed to provide protection against four different influenza virus strains: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). The vaccine is produced by disrupting (splitting) the virus with detergents, followed by inactivation, ensuring it cannot cause infection. It works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) proteins, thereby preventing viral entry and release in host cells. Beyond its primary indication for preventing seasonal influenza, this specific vaccine type was evaluated in the **IAMI (Influenza vaccination After Myocardial Infarction)** trial, sponsored by **Region Örebro Län**. The trial demonstrated that early administration of the vaccine following a myocardial infarction or in high-risk stable coronary artery disease significantly reduced the risk of all-cause mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), likely due to the prevention of influenza-triggered systemic inflammation and secondary cardiovascular stress.
