Overview

The quadrivalent influenza vaccine (split virion, inactivated) is a seasonal vaccine designed to provide active immunity against four different strains of the influenza virus: two influenza A subtypes (typically H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). The vaccine is produced by growing the viruses in embryonated chicken eggs, followed by inactivation with formaldehyde and disruption (splitting) of the viral particles using detergents. This process exposes the internal and surface antigens while rendering the virus non-infectious. The primary mechanism of action involves the induction of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) proteins. These antibodies prevent the virus from attaching to host cells and inhibit the release of new viral particles, thereby reducing the risk of infection and severe disease. This quadrivalent formulation offers broader protection compared to older trivalent vaccines by including both circulating B-lineages.
