A quadrivalent influenza vaccine (QIV) is an inactivated vaccine containing antigens from four different influenza virus strains: two influenza A subtypes (typically H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). The 'lysate' or 'split-virion' designation indicates that the virus particles have been chemically disrupted (lysed) using detergents to reduce side effects while preserving the immunogenic surface proteins, primarily hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). These vaccines are updated annually based on World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to match circulating strains. They are primarily used for the active immunization of individuals to prevent seasonal influenza.
