Overview

Quadrivalent influenza vaccine (virion fragment, inactivated) is a split-virion vaccine developed to provide broad protection against seasonal influenza. It contains inactivated fragments of four different influenza virus strains: two influenza A subtypes (typically H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata), as recommended annually by the World Health Organization. The vaccine works by presenting viral hemagglutinin (HA) antigens to the immune system, stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies that prevent viral entry into host cells. While Janssen Vaccines & Prevention B.V. developed a specific candidate (JNJ-61334437) within this class, the company later pivoted its focus, and this vaccine type has notably served as an active comparator in Phase 3 clinical trials for Janssen's other vaccine programs, such as the 9-valent extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC9V) vaccine (VAC52416) for invasive ExPEC disease.
