The quadrivalent influenza virus split vaccine (MDCK cells) is an inactivated, split-virion vaccine developed by the Shanghai Institute of Biological Products (a subsidiary of Sinopharm) for the prevention of seasonal influenza. Unlike traditional influenza vaccines produced in embryonated chicken eggs, this vaccine is manufactured using Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell culture technology. This approach eliminates the risk of egg-adaptive mutations that can alter the vaccine's antigenic profile and makes the vaccine suitable for individuals with egg allergies. The vaccine is a split-virion type, meaning the virus is inactivated and chemically disrupted to reduce reactogenicity while maintaining immunogenicity. It contains antigens (hemagglutinin) from four influenza strains: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata), providing broader protection against circulating seasonal viruses.
