The quadrivalent virosomal influenza vaccine is a cell-based, virosomal subunit vaccine developed by Crucell Holland BV (a subsidiary of Janssen/Johnson & Johnson). It utilizes a virosomal delivery system—lipid-based nanoparticles that incorporate influenza surface antigens, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA), to mimic the viral envelope and enhance immunogenicity without the need for traditional adjuvants. This quadrivalent formulation is designed to provide broader protection against seasonal influenza by including two influenza A strains and two influenza B strains, compared to the trivalent Inflexal V. The vaccine is produced using cell-based manufacturing technology rather than traditional egg-based methods. It has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials (e.g., NCT02148328) to assess safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity in healthy adults.
