Quahog, unspecified is an allergenic extract derived from the quahog clam (*Mercenaria mercenaria*). It is utilized as a diagnostic agent in vivo to detect hypersensitivity to quahog shellfish. When administered via skin prick or intradermal injection, the extract's constituent proteins interact with specific IgE antibodies bound to mast cells in sensitized individuals. This interaction triggers the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators, resulting in a visible wheal-and-flare reaction. Approved by the FDA in 1941 under BLA 103888, it remains a standard tool for clinicians to confirm shellfish allergies.
