Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Quartette (DR-103) is an extended-cycle oral contraceptive developed by Teva Women's Health. It consists of a 91-day regimen of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel. Unlike traditional 91-day regimens that use a constant dose of estrogen, Quartette features an ascending dose of ethinyl estradiol (20 mcg, 25 mcg, and 30 mcg) combined with a constant dose of levonorgestrel (150 mcg) for 84 days, followed by 7 days of 10 mcg ethinyl estradiol. This design is intended to reduce breakthrough bleeding, a common issue with extended-cycle contraceptives. It was approved by the FDA in 2013 for the prevention of pregnancy.
